The Italian Lakes

Four seasons, Swiss-level prices.

Como, Maggiore, Garda: the lakes are where retirees go when they want Italy with Swiss infrastructure next door — dramatic scenery, ferries instead of traffic, and Milan's hospitals and airports within reach. It is the pattern on our homepage image, and the most expensive one we cover.

Towns retirees shortlist

Como city is walkable, elegant, and priced like it. Stresa and Verbania on Lake Maggiore offer better value with Switzerland at the border. Lake Garda's northern towns suit the outdoorsy; its southern shore is flatter, busier, and more practical year-round.

What it costs, honestly

Healthcare access

The lakes' trump card: Lombardy's health system is among Italy's strongest, Milan's specialists are an hour away, and English-speaking doctors are easier to find here than anywhere south of the Alps. If healthcare access tops your list, this pattern leads.

Day to day

Life is organized, seasonal, and outdoors: ferries, markets, hiking, and a calendar that empties in winter. English goes further here than in the south — tourism built that — but residence paperwork still happens in Italian, at the comune, on a weekday morning.

Who this fits

Retirees with solid budgets who want four real seasons, top-tier healthcare access, and Alpine scenery — and who don't need the 7% regime to make the numbers work.

Worth knowing: The postcard towns hibernate: from November to March some lakeside villages close down hard, and lake-effect fog is a real thing on the southern shores. Rent through a winter before you buy the view.
